For challenging fluid measurement & monitoring, ultrasonic level sensors and ultrasonic level transmitters are very useful. These accurate and reliable sensors are designed for the most difficult fluids to monitor, where contact with media is not desirable. The level height is calculated from the time it takes for ultrasonic pulses to travel from the sensor to the surface of the medium and back. Chemical and physical properties of the medium do not influence the measurement result.
The sensor pulses in the direction of the product surface. The pulse signals are reflected and are received by the sensor. The transmitter measures the time t between pulse transmission and reception. The meter uses the time t (and the velocity of sound) to
calculate the distance D between the sensor membrane and the product surface:
D = c •t/2. As the device knows the empty distance H from a user entry, it can calculate the level as follows: L= H – D.
The ultrasonic velocity in gas is influenced by the gas temperature, So the level meter needs to detect the gas temperature at work. So, the material level meter needs to detect the gas temperature at work and compensation for sound velocity.
B: Blanking distance D: Distance value L: Level value
H: Installation height F: Level span
This continuous level measurement is based on the travel time of ultrasonic pulses to the surface of the medium and back. When installing the sensor, the typical block distance has to be considered. Rough liquid surfaces and the changed angle during filling and emptying granulated solids influence the reflection of the ultrasonic pulses and may impact measurement.
An ultrasonic level sensor is also appropriate for corrosive media like Acids, Wastewater, Inks and Paints, Slurries, Food and Beverage, Semiconductor Process Chemicals and Oils and Petroleum Distillates etc.
